North Carolina’s Supreme Court hasn’t ruled on the state’s duty to provide a sound basic education two years after rehearing the case.
Two years after oral arguments in North Carolina’s landmark Leandro case, the state Supreme Court has yet to issue a ruling, delaying a decision on the state’s obligation to provide a “sound, basic education.” The case, rooted in a 1997 ruling, has seen repeated findings that the state fails to meet constitutional standards, prompting a 2020 order for a multi-billion-dollar remedial plan.
After a Republican-majority court took over in 2022, the case was reheard in 2024, but no decision has been released.
Legal experts question whether courts can mandate funding without legislative input, while advocates warn that thousands of students have been affected by the prolonged delay.
No ruling is expected before at least March 2025.
