On 24 February 2026, New Zealand’s primary school principals accepted a government pay deal after voting in favor of a new agreement with the NZEI union.
The settlement includes a 2.5% immediate pay rise, a 2.1% increase after 12 months, and a $15,000 workload allowance to support implementation of the new national curriculum.
The Leadership in Literacy and Numeracy base payment will rise to $10,000 annually.
Education Minister Erica Stanford welcomed the outcome, highlighting its role in strengthening school leadership and improving student outcomes.
The agreement follows previous rejection of a similar offer and reflects progress in resolving disputes over pay and reform-related demands.
