New Zealand’s People’s Select Committee condemned the 2025 Equal Pay Act as unlawful and harmful, citing rushed passage and lack of public input.
A self-organized People’s Select Committee in New Zealand has condemned the government’s 2025 Equal Pay Amendment Act, calling it a breach of the rule of law and human rights obligations.
The committee, formed after the government canceled 33 pay equity claims without consultation, found the law was rushed through without public input, a Regulatory Impact Statement, or proper assessment of its effects.
It criticized the government for undermining due process, redacting key documents, and reallocating funds, with supporters arguing the move was driven by budget concerns rather than fairness.
The report, based on nearly 1,400 submissions, highlights widespread harm to women in care, health, and social services, and recommends establishing an independent pay equity unit.
The committee’s findings have sparked calls for all political parties to restore genuine pay equity.
