New Zealand’s Northland charity shops are turning unsold clothes into mattresses and insulation, cutting landfill waste and costs.
Northland charity op shops in New Zealand are testing a six-month initiative to convert unsellable donated clothes into mattresses, insulation, and erosion matting, reducing landfill waste and saving disposal costs.
Collected by Cbec Eco-Solutions, the textiles are processed in Auckland, with 80% made into mattresses, 10% into insulation, and 10% into erosion matting.
The project, backed by a $150,000 government grant and Cbec, has produced 120 mattresses and also repurposes medical-grade plastic wrap into durable housing boards.
It aims to address the growing textile waste crisis and may expand nationally.
