New Zealand advances India FTA ratification, aiming to eliminate tariffs on Indian imports and grant preferential access to 95% of its exports, despite political hurdles.
New Zealand is making progress toward ratifying its free trade agreement with India, with Trade Minister Todd McClay stating the deal is stronger than most existing ones and would eliminate tariffs on all Indian imports while granting tariff-free or reduced tariffs on 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India.
Although New Zealand First has withdrawn support, McClay reports constructive talks with Labour, which has had full access to the agreement’s text since late last year and is seeking stronger migrant worker protections.
McClay emphasized that past major trade deals required bipartisan backing and affirmed the government would not proceed with an inadequate agreement, maintaining optimism about securing broader political support.
