A new poll shows most Americans, including many Republicans, see Trump as more erratic with age, ahead of his State of the Union at 79.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted February 18–23, 2026, finds 61% of Americans believe President Donald Trump has become more erratic with age, including 30% of Republicans, 89% of Democrats, and 64% of independents.
The survey of 4,638 adults, with a two-point margin of error, comes ahead of Trump’s State of the Union address at age 79.
His approval rating remains at 40%, down from 47% at the start of his term, while only 45% view him as mentally sharp—down from 54% in 2023.
Most Americans also believe Washington leaders are too old, with 79% saying officials don’t represent most citizens.
