A new Indian textbook details judicial delays and corruption, prompting calls for broader accountability scrutiny.
In contrast to previous editions, a section on corruption, case backlogs, and judge shortages in India's judiciary is now included in the updated NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbook. It lists more than 4.7 crore pending cases in lower courts, 62.40 lakh in high courts, and 81,000 in the Supreme Court. It also points out that judges are subject to an accountability system such as CPGRAMS and a code of conduct. B.R., former Chief Justice. Gavai is cited as cautioning that corruption erodes public confidence. Congress MP Kapil Sibal has called for a more balanced approach and questioned why corruption in politics, public services, and investigative agencies isn't subject to the same level of scrutiny as this inclusion. The revision is a component of the National Education Policy 2020's larger curriculum reforms.
