The Netherlands sworn in a new minority government on February 23, 2026, led by 38-year-old Rob Jetten, the country’s youngest-ever prime minister and first openly gay leader.
The coalition, formed by Democrats 66 (D66), the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), holds 66 of 150 seats in the House of Representatives—10 short of a majority—making it the first minority government in decades.
The new cabinet, with 18 ministers and 10 state secretaries, will focus on improving public administration, accelerating housing and energy transition, advancing climate action, boosting high-tech industries, reforming healthcare and social security, tightening immigration rules, and strengthening national security and international cooperation.
The government’s success will depend on ongoing cooperation with parliament and civil society.
