A man was sentenced to three years in prison for careless driving that caused the death of a 19-year-old motorbike rider in Dublin in 2021.
Andres Grans De Lima Sores, 38, was sentenced to three years in prison for careless driving causing the death of 19-year-old Calvin Gilchrist in Dublin on July 31, 2021.
Sores tailgated Gilchrist’s stolen motorbike for nearly 500 meters, driving one second behind at times and crossing into oncoming traffic.
An oncoming taxi collided with the bike, causing fatal head injuries.
Sores fled the scene and was identified months later through his red Toyota.
The court acknowledged Gilchrist’s reckless actions, including riding without a helmet and on a stolen bike, but emphasized Sores’s responsibility as a car driver.
Judge Pauline Codd noted the lasting trauma for Gilchrist’s family, recognized Sores’s guilty plea and remorse, and commended bystanders who helped.
Sentencing was delayed for a probation report.
