Jazz artist Immanuel Wilkins performed a moving Tiny Desk Concert featuring music that blends ancestral memory, Black resilience, and spiritual depth.
He opened with "AFTERLIFE RESIDENCE TIME," using sodium’s long presence in the body as a metaphor for generational trauma, followed by "Fugitive Ritual, Selah," honoring the Black church’s rituals.
The concert also debuted "THE BIG COUNTRY," a new track from an upcoming three-volume live project capturing his band’s dynamic, improvisational energy.
Accompanied by pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Ryoma Takenaga, and drummer Kweku Sumbry, Wilkins emphasized creative innovation and emotional authenticity.
The performance was produced by NPR Music’s Suraya Mohamed and filmed by a dedicated team.
