Irish dentist Jerome Kiely sentenced to 3 years (2 suspended) for defrauding HSE of €58,000 over 17 years via fake dental claims.
A Tipperary dentist, Jerome Kiely, 47, was sentenced to three years in prison with two years suspended after pleading guilty to defrauding Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) of €58,000 over 17 years by submitting false claims for dental treatments under the Dental Treatment Services Scheme.
He admitted to fabricating procedures, including claiming tooth extractions from a patient who had no teeth, and forging records, actions that deprived at least one elderly patient of necessary care.
Despite his financial stability and a history of depression, Judge Martin Nolan ruled a custodial sentence was necessary due to the breach of trust and severity of the fraud.
Kiely was ordered to pay €100,000 to the HSE—more than the stolen amount—as punishment and is unlikely to resume practicing dentistry.
