Illinois state Senator Mike Simmons, a Black Democratic candidate for Congress in Chicago’s 9th District, was reported to police by a resident while canvassing in a North Side apartment building.
Simmons, who has lived in the area for 15 years and is the first Black person to represent the Far North Side in the state Senate, said he identified himself as a candidate and state lawmaker.
The resident questioned his identity and requested documentation, prompting a police response.
Officers arrived minutes later and spoke with Simmons, who left the building voluntarily.
His campaign called the incident a case of racial profiling, citing Simmons’ 2021 law banning police calls based on race and his sponsorship of legislation classifying such calls as hate crimes.
The event occurred during the primary campaign season.
