Half of Australian households still discard used batteries in regular trash despite knowing the fire risks, according to the B-Cycle battery stewardship scheme.
The group warned of dangers to waste workers and trucks, especially during post-Christmas clean-ups, noting households store an average of 11 batteries each.
In the past year, 3.3 million kilograms were recycled, capturing 18.5% of available batteries—up from 17.6% the previous year.

Despite 56% awareness of risks, nearly half still dispose of batteries improperly, prompting calls for more states to adopt regulations for e-bike and e-scooter battery recycling, following New South Wales’ new standards.
