Ghana threatens to remove new doctors from public payroll by Feb 2026 if they refuse rural postings, sparking debate over incentives and retention.
Ghana's Health Minister has threatened to remove newly qualified doctors from the public payroll by end-February 2026 if they refuse rural postings, citing the need to address staffing shortages in underserved areas.
The Akim Oda MP, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, warned that such threats are counterproductive, arguing that poor incentives, lack of support, and the private sector’s better opportunities in urban areas make rural postings unattractive.
He urged the government to prioritize constructive dialogue and improved conditions over punitive measures to retain doctors in rural communities.
