The Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana is investigating the alleged diversion of 50 containers of palm oil, worth GH¢25.8 million, from a transit shipment to Burkina Faso into the local market without paying duties, resulting in an estimated GH¢10.5 million tax loss.
Preliminary findings indicate a coordinated scheme involving Customs officers, National Security operatives, and clearing agents, stemming from an intelligence-led operation in November 2025.
The probe is ongoing, with no suspects named.
In response, the Finance Minister banned land transit of cooking oil, requiring all such imports to enter and exit through seaports.
President John Mahama labeled smuggling and counterfeiting as economic sabotage, vowing strict enforcement and stronger border controls to protect public revenue and legitimate businesses.
