A federal panel upheld Utah’s new congressional map, preserving one Democratic and three Republican districts ahead of the 2026 elections.
A federal three-judge panel upheld a court-ordered redistricting plan that creates one Democratic and three Republican districts, rejecting a Republican-led challenge to Utah's recently drawn congressional map.
Judge Dianna Gibson's 2024 decision that the previous Republican-drawn map violated Proposition 4, a 2018 voter-approved measure establishing an independent redistricting process, was confirmed by the decision, which was released on the last day before important election deadlines.
The court cautioned that altering the map at this time would confuse voters and deemed the legal challenge unlikely to succeed.
Republicans are still considering a ballot initiative to repeal the independent commission and anti-gerrymandering regulations, but anti-gerrymandering advocates view the decision as a victory since it puts an end to attempts to change the map prior to the 2026 elections.
