England’s NHS will pay GPs up to £3,000 yearly to prescribe weight-loss drugs to expand access for patients with severe obesity.
As part of a £25 million effort to increase access and lessen disparities, the NHS in England is providing general practitioners with up to £3,000 per year to prescribe weight-loss medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy.
In addition to supporting a long-term NHS rollout that prioritizes patients with severe obesity and related health conditions, the move aims to increase equitable use of these medications, which are currently mostly obtained privately.
Wes Streeting, the health secretary, warned against the dangers of unregulated and private use and emphasized that access should be determined by medical necessity rather than financial means.
Only roughly 220,000 patients are anticipated to receive treatment in the first three years, despite the incentives, raising questions about sustainability and workload.
