A documentary titled *A Cree Approach*, directed by Tristin Greyeyes, premieres March 7 at Vancouver’s Gender Equity in Media Festival, honoring her grandmother Freda Ahenakew, a Cree educator and language revitalization advocate.
Born in 1932 on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, Ahenakew overcame challenges including residential school and early motherhood to return to education, earning degrees and becoming a respected language expert.
Her master’s thesis, published as *Cree Language Structures: A Cree Approach*, became a foundational text.
The film highlights her legacy in preserving Indigenous language and culture, and will screen at festivals in Surrey, B.C., and Minnesota.
