Canterbury Museum seeks $64M more to finish redevelopment, now costing $262M and opening in 2030.
Canterbury Museum in Christchurch is seeking $64 million in additional funding to complete its redevelopment, now projected to cost nearly $262 million and open in 2030 due to inflation, rising construction costs, and funding delays.
The museum, which houses 2.3 million objects including key Antarctic and national heritage collections, has exhausted all cost-saving measures and requests $26.9 million from Christchurch City Council, smaller contributions from regional councils, and $32 million from central government.
It forecasts $83 million in annual regional economic activity and 800,000 visitors, with overseas visitors potentially paying entry fees.
The project remains at risk without new funding.
