Australia paid $220 million for UK-made nuclear reactor parts to build future submarines under the AUKUS deal.
Australia has paid Aus$310 million ($220 million) for the first British-built nuclear reactor components for its future SSN-AUKUS submarines, a key step in the AUKUS defense partnership with the U.S. and U.K.
The components, to be manufactured by Rolls-Royce in the UK, will power submarines built in Adelaide, with the first vessels expected in the early 2040s.
The investment supports a broader Aus$2.4 billion commitment to expand UK production capacity and includes a $3.9 billion upgrade to Australia’s Osborne shipyard.
The project aims to create 20,000 high-skilled jobs and strengthen regional deterrence, particularly against growing military influence in the Indo-Pacific.
