A 35-year-old woman, Karen Maree Lee Smith, was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm for punching another woman outside a Bathurst primary school on September 18, 2025, after a verbal dispute began when the victim made a disparaging comment.
Smith, who had been nearby, approached the victim, struck her multiple times, causing a cut lip, and grabbed her hair before fleeing.
Police arrested her later that day.
In February 2026, Magistrate Gemma Slack-Smith sentenced her to a 12-month Community Correction Order, calling her response “appalling” despite acknowledging the victim’s provocation and Smith’s lack of prior criminal history beyond a 2010 driving offense.
Smith’s solicitor said the incident was out of character and cited her relocation to North Queensland and expenses to return for sentencing.
