Western Australia has passed "Kelly’s Law," named after 32-year-old Kelly T’Hart, killed in a May 2024 hit-and-run by a drunk driver.
The law, prompted by outrage after the accused, Maddison Peace Bain, was allowed to drive again just months after being charged, bans individuals facing serious driving offenses—including drunk driving, reckless driving, and hit-and-run—from operating vehicles until their court case concludes.
The legislation, which expands automatic suspensions and gives courts greater power to extend disqualifications, aims to prevent further trauma for victims’ families and improve road safety.
Bain pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death under the influence and driving under the influence, with sentencing scheduled for April 2026.
