Texas study finds traditional college prep courses underperform, with dual credit leading to better outcomes.
A new study of nearly 1 million Texas high school graduates (2016–2023) finds that traditional college prep courses in English and math do not reliably prepare students for postsecondary success, with participants 5% less likely to earn a degree or certification within six years than non-labeled peers and 18% less likely than those in dual credit programs.
Dual credit students showed higher college enrollment, completion rates, and 15%–20% higher later wages.
Despite Texas raising its college readiness benchmark to 88%, researchers including Jacob Kirksey of Texas Tech University warn that prep courses may mislead students into developmental coursework and debt, urging state leaders to shift incentives toward more effective pathways like dual credit and away from low-impact options.
