On February 22, 2026, NSW SES volunteers rescued a 400–500 kg horse that fell into a septic tank in Moruya after its lid collapsed.
Responders from Batemans Bay, recently trained in large animal rescues, used specialized equipment and coordinated with a neighbor’s excavator under supervision.
A veterinarian sedated the horse to reduce stress, and the animal was safely extracted and walked away afterward.
The successful operation underscored the importance of specialized training for SES volunteers.
