New Zealand’s South Marlborough Trust fights invasive conifers threatening native species, agriculture, and water supplies with community efforts and a $450,000 grant.
The South Marlborough Landscape Restoration Trust is fighting the rapid spread of invasive wilding conifers, mainly Douglas fir, across a 50,000-hectare area in New Zealand’s Wairau Valley, where infestations grow by about 400 hectares annually.
The invasion threatens native ecosystems, including 29 nationally threatened plant species—nine unique to the region—and endangers agriculture, tourism, and water supplies.
The Trust, supported by over 60 volunteers and a $450,000 grant from the Rātā Foundation, has removed 50,000 trees from remote alpine zones and conducted aerial treatments on 10,000 hectares.
A peer-reviewed 10-year plan estimates $10 million annually is needed to halt the spread and restore native habitats, with officials stressing that sustained community-led action is critical to prevent irreversible ecological damage.
