New Zealand doubled nursing scholarships in 2026 to boost primary care access and prescribing capacity.
New Zealand has awarded 235 advanced nursing scholarships for 2026, nearly doubling the original target of 120, due to high demand.
The funding, within existing resources, supports nurses in pursuing either a Postgraduate Diploma in Prescribing or a Master of Nursing.
Upon completion, they will be able to prescribe medications for common and long-term conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory issues, and menopause symptoms.
The initiative, part of the government’s Primary Care Tactical Action Plan launched in March 2025, aims to expand access to community-based care, reduce pressure on GPs and hospitals, and strengthen the primary care workforce.
Training begins in February 2026 and includes academic study and supervised clinical experience.
