Michael Holmes sentenced to 15 months for dragging injured kangaroo 400 meters, causing its death.
Michael Anthony Holmes, 61, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for dragging a conscious kangaroo 400 meters behind his vehicle in New South Wales, causing severe injuries and deformities.
The incident occurred on April 13, 2025, when Holmes tied a nylon rope around the animal’s neck and dragged it along a rural road, despite knowing it was injured.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty and showed no remorse, telling the court he viewed kangaroos as pests.
Magistrate Roger Clisdell cited the extreme cruelty and Holmes’ lack of regret, ruling he posed a risk to the community and requiring immediate incarceration with an eight-month non-parole period.
The kangaroo died later that day.
The case has drawn national attention to animal welfare laws and the consequences of animal cruelty in Australia.
