Malaysia passes bill to split top prosecutor roles and limit PM to two terms, boosting judicial independence.
Malaysia has introduced a constitutional amendment bill to separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, ending the practice of combining both positions.
Under the new law, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will appoint the Public Prosecutor based on the Judicial and Legal Service Commission’s recommendation, with consent from the Conference of Rulers, for a fixed seven-year term.
The move aims to eliminate political influence, ensure independence, and strengthen the rule of law.
The bill also limits the prime minister to two terms.
Both bills are now in the first reading stage in parliament, with further debate scheduled for March.
