Veteran Indian politician Mukul Roy, former Union Railway Minister and founding member of the Trinamool Congress, died at age 71 on February 23, 2026, from cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Kolkata. A key strategist in the TMC’s rise, he served as general secretary and held national and state-level positions, including Rajya Sabha member and MLA. After joining the BJP in 2017, he won a 2021 Assembly seat but returned to the TMC in 2021. The Calcutta High Court disqualified him in November 2025 under anti-defection laws, but the Supreme Court stayed the order in January 2026, allowing him to retain his seat pending review. Roy had long battled dementia, Parkinson’s, diabetes, and recent brain injuries. His final rites are pending.
