Des Moines Fire Captain Joe Van Haalen received the department’s Medal of Honor for rescuing a 7-year-old boy from the swollen Des Moines River near Principal Park on June 28, 2025. Heavy rains had created dangerous, debris-filled currents, and Van Haalen acted immediately, entering the swift water without waiting for the specialized Water Emergency Team. He secured a rope around his forearm, reached the child, and pulled him to safety. The rare honor, not awarded in over ten years, recognized his swift leadership and courage. Two other firefighters were also commended for their roles in the successful rescue. Van Haalen said saving the boy was the only option.
