Dick Advocaat resigns as Curaçao coach due to daughter’s illness, ahead of their first World Cup.
Dick Advocaat has resigned as head coach of Curaçao’s national team due to his daughter’s serious illness, stepping down before the 2026 World Cup.
The 78-year-old Dutch coach, who led the tiny island nation—population 185,000—to its first-ever World Cup qualification, said family comes before football.
Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify, will now be led by former PSV and Twente coach Fred Rutten, who will maintain Advocaat’s tactical approach.
The team, grouped with Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast, begins its World Cup campaign in June.
