Australia investigates systemic failures in childcare after multiple sexual abuse cases and convictions.
Childcare workers across Australia are on high alert after a series of sexual abuse scandals, prompting a Senate inquiry in Brisbane to examine systemic failures in the early childhood care sector.
The inquiry follows the life imprisonment of Ashley Paul Griffith for over 300 offences against children in Queensland, with additional allegations in NSW and Italy, and charges against Joshua Dale Brown, a former Affinity Education Group worker, for over 70 sex offences.
In response, major providers like Goodstart and Affinity have strengthened safety measures, including CCTV, simplified reporting, zero-tolerance policies, and encouraging staff to report any “ick” moments.
Affinity, which had over 1,700 regulatory breaches from 2021 to 2024, reported fewer incidents after reforms.
The sector continues efforts to rebuild public trust through improved oversight and accountability.
