Australia approves Woodside’s North West Shelf gas project extension to 2070 with new emissions rules, facing legal challenges over environmental and Indigenous concerns.
The Australian government approved Woodside Energy’s request to extend the North West Shelf gas project in Karratha to 2070, following negotiations that led to revised environmental conditions.
The final 48 conditions require Woodside to maintain emissions at levels no higher than those in the 12 months before approval, allowing predictive monitoring for existing operations until 2030, with continuous monitoring required before third-party gas processing begins.
The decision, which came after Woodside pushed back on real-time monitoring and five-year emission targets, is under legal challenge by environmental and Indigenous groups concerned about the project’s impact on the nearby UNESCO-listed Murujuga rock art site.
