Armed fighters in South Sudan killed 16 civilians, including women and children, falsely claiming to register them for food aid.
More than a dozen civilians, including women and children, were killed in South Sudan’s Jonglei State after being lured from their homes by armed fighters claiming to register them for food aid, survivors said.
The attackers, identified as members of the Agwelek militia—a Shilluk-led force not fully integrated into the national army—gathered victims in a cattle shelter, bound them, and opened fire.
Survivors reported 22 deaths, while the county commissioner confirmed 16.
The commissioner denied the aid pretext, calling it a lie, and said the fighters had defied orders, claiming revenge for past attacks.
Several officers were arrested, and 150 fighters disarmed.
The violence occurred in a conflict-ridden region where over 280,000 people have been displaced since December and more than half the population faces severe food insecurity.
