Thieves stole 1,700 toxic poppy plants from a Victoria farm, sparking a public health alert due to risks of seizures, high fever, and respiratory failure.
Thieves stole about 1,700 toxic poppy plants from a farm in Ballarat, Victoria, between February 14 and 16, prompting a public health alert.
The plants contain high levels of thebaine and oripavine—chemicals not used for pain relief and linked to severe, life-threatening effects like seizures, dangerously high body temperature, and respiratory issues.
Unlike common opioids, thebaine stimulates the nervous system and cannot be reversed by naloxone.
Health officials warn against handling or experimenting with the stolen plants due to serious risks.
This follows a similar 2022–2023 theft in Tasmania, where contaminated poppy seed tea caused dozens of hospitalizations and multiple deaths.
The alkaloid poppy industry is strictly regulated, with crops planted in autumn and spring and harvested from December to February.
Police in both states are investigating.
