President Cyril Ramaphosa honored Hosi Dr Phylia Tinyiko Lwandlamuni N’wamitwa II, the first female traditional leader of the Vatsonga, at her official funeral in Limpopo, praising her as a constitutional trailblazer who challenged male primogeniture after a 2008 court ruling allowed her to assume leadership.
She served in Parliament from 1994 to 2009, advocated for rural women’s rights, and promoted gender equality in customary law.
Ramaphosa called for traditions to never justify women’s oppression, urging all institutions to uphold her legacy of courage and equality.
