Illinois proposes lowering BAC limit to 0.05 to reduce impaired driving, aligning with safety science.
Illinois lawmakers are considering lowering the state’s legal blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) limit from 0.08 to 0.05 for driving, boating, and snowmobiling, which would make it one of the strictest in the U.S., second only to Utah.
The bill, introduced by State Rep. Daniel Didech, would establish a uniform standard across motor vehicle activities and could affect workplace injury claims involving vehicles.
Supporters say the change, backed by scientific evidence showing impairment can occur at lower BAC levels—such as after one drink for some—could reduce traffic fatalities and align with national safety recommendations.
The bill has been referred to a committee but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing, with a decision expected in the coming months.
