Hugh Flouch’s book on Victorian-era Abyssinia in Hornsey Vale wins top local history award for 2024.
Historian Hugh Flouch’s book on Abyssinia, a Victorian-era community in Hornsey Vale established in the 1860s and now partly beneath Hornsey School for Girls, has won Best Local History Book of 2024 from the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society.
Based on two decades of research using archives from Bruce Castle, the Hornsey Historical Society, and the London Archives, the work reveals the settlement’s industries, community life, and connections to surrounding areas, including the surprising claim by horse-racing tipster Prince Monolulu of Abyssinian royal descent.
Personal accounts from residents like Pauline Andrews, whose family lived there until the area’s 1968 demolition, add depth.
The book, richly illustrated with maps, photos, and archival materials, is praised for its scholarship, storytelling, and ability to uncover broader societal insights.
The Hornsey Historical Society also won for Best Local History Journal of 2024, marking a significant recognition of regional historical scholarship.
