A federal jury in Texas has convicted former NFL player Keith J.
Gray, 39, of orchestrating a $328 million Medicare fraud scheme through two labs he owned, where he paid kickbacks to marketers for medically unnecessary genetic tests.
Prosecutors said Gray used deceptive tactics, including forged physician orders and fake invoices, to secure Medicare payments for tests on seniors, resulting in about $54 million in fraudulent claims.
He used some illicit funds to buy luxury vehicles.
Gray faces up to 10 years in prison per count on charges including conspiracy, violating the Anti-Kickback Statute, and money laundering, with sentencing pending.
The case is part of the DOJ’s Health Care Fraud Strike Force, which has targeted over $45 billion in fraud since 2007.
