Assam is building a new museum in Guwahati, funded by the JSW Group, to house the historic Vrindavani Vastra—a 500-year-old silk textile linked to saint Srimanta Sankardeva—when it returns from the British Museum in 2027.
The foundation stone was laid on February 22, 2026, by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who called the project a milestone in preserving Assam’s cultural heritage.
The museum, expected to be completed in 18 months, will protect the 937 cm by 231 cm textile under strict conditions.
Sarma highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of balancing development and heritage.
Cultural experts praise the textile’s intricate craftsmanship, particularly its Lampas weaving technique.
The project aims to strengthen Assam’s identity and promote its Vaishnavite legacy.
