Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a presidential amnesty effective February 2026, releasing thousands of prisoners.
Full or partial releases apply to female inmates, juveniles, those serving 48 months or less, those aged 60 or older who served at least one-third of their sentence, and individuals with terminal illnesses or certified disabilities.
Life prisoners who served 20 years, including time under a death sentence, are fully pardoned.
Those serving over 48 months may receive a quarter of their sentence reduced if they meet criteria and are not convicted of excluded crimes like murder, rape, treason, or trafficking.
Excluded are escapees, military court convicts, and those convicted under specific acts like the Public Order and Security Act.
The Correctional Services will coordinate with social welfare agencies to support released individuals.
