A UK police officer was fired for racist WhatsApp messages targeting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
Detective Constable Mark Luker, a British Transport Police officer who responded to the 2017 London Bridge terror attack, has been dismissed for gross misconduct after using offensive terms like “pikey” and “dags” in WhatsApp messages targeting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
The misconduct panel found the messages, sent between late 2024 and early 2025, were deliberately discriminatory, including jokes linking the communities to theft via references to scrap metal and lead roofing, and mocking a scene from the film *Snatch*.
Though Luker claimed his humor was a coping mechanism for trauma and denied intent to offend, the panel concluded he likely knew the language was offensive, breaching professional standards despite his prior commendations.
