Timmins police will complete mental health crisis training by March 10, 2026, using VR simulations to improve de-escalation.
The Timmins Police Service will finish its mandatory mental health crisis response training by March 10, 2026, ahead of Ontario’s April 1, 2026, deadline.
The training, required since April 2024 following the 2013 killing of Sammy Yatim, uses virtual reality simulations from Wilfrid Laurier University’s Street Smarts program to improve de-escalation skills.
Timmins is the third Ontario police service—after Hamilton and Kingston—to adopt on-site VR training, with 25 of the province’s 56 services currently enrolled and 42 sending officers to become certified instructors.
The initiative aims to reduce force use and improve outcomes during mental health crises.
