Teen cannabis use doubles risk of psychosis and bipolar disorder in young adulthood, per large study.
A large-scale study of nearly 464,000 adolescents found that cannabis use during teenage years is linked to double the risk of developing psychotic and bipolar disorders by young adulthood, with diagnoses typically emerging 1.7 to 2.3 years after use began.
The research, based on electronic health records from 2016 to 2023 and including all self-reported use, also found increased risks for depression and anxiety, even after accounting for prior mental health conditions and other substance use.
The findings highlight concerns about rising cannabis potency and higher use among teens in disadvantaged communities, urging stronger public health policies, youth access restrictions, and evidence-based education for families and providers.
