Students protest Odisha's refusal to grant university status to Shailabala Women’s College, citing its legacy and academic excellence.
Students at Shailabala Women’s College in Cuttack protested after the Odisha government excluded the historic women’s college from its 2026–27 plan to establish four new universities.
The college, founded by Madhusudan Das and Shailabala Das, has 18 postgraduate departments and an NAAC A grade, but remains affiliated with Rama Devi Women’s University.
Protesters, including students and alumni, criticized the decision, citing the institution’s legacy and academic standing, and opposed plans to repurpose part of its land for a museum.
They vowed to continue their agitation until the government addresses their demand for university status.
