South Africa pulled out of the 2026 Venice Biennale after censoring an artist’s Gaza-focused exhibit, sparking outcry over free expression.
South Africa has withdrawn from the 2026 Venice Biennale after Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie canceled artist Gabrielle Goliath’s exhibition, which honored Palestinian poet Hiba Abu Nada and addressed violence in Gaza, Namibia, and South Africa.
McKenzie called the work “highly divisive” and alleged foreign funding for a geopolitical message, leading to the termination of the pavilion agreement.
Goliath sued to reinstate her project, but a court dismissed the case, prompting plans for an appeal.
Despite efforts to find a replacement, no official installation will be presented, drawing criticism from artists and advocates who say the decision undermines artistic freedom and South Africa’s international stance on Gaza.
