A severe fire in Monson, MA, damaged a home, injured two officers, and slowed firefighters due to limited hydrants and frozen lakes.
A three-alarm fire in Monson, Massachusetts, caused catastrophic damage to a home on Silver Street Thursday afternoon, with firefighters hampered by a lack of nearby hydrants and frozen lakes that blocked water access.
The blaze, which started around 4:30 p.m., spread rapidly, leading to the hospitalization of two police officers for smoke inhalation.
Monson’s water system covers only about a third of the town, and tankers from neighboring communities could not refill from frozen lakes, delaying the response.
Firefighters remained on scene until at least 11:30 p.m., during which time the roof partially collapsed.
The cause is under investigation by local and state authorities.
