Soldiers from the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Infantry Division won the Best Innovation award at the U.S. Army’s first Best Drone Warfighter Competition in Huntsville, Alabama, on February 19, 2026.
Their project, Project RED, uses an AI-powered drone with a 3D-printed carbon fiber robotic arm to retrieve downed unmanned aircraft, distinguishing between friendly and enemy drones.
The team received a plaque, a drone prototype, and a one-year contract for further development.
The competition, hosted by the Army Aviation Association of America, featured Army teams showcasing drone innovations.
