Pau Gasol elected chair of IOC Athletes' Commission in Milan on Feb. 20, 2026, succeeding previous leader and serving until 2028.
Pau Gasol, the Spanish basketball legend and five-time Olympian, has been elected chair of the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission, succeeding previous leadership and serving until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The election occurred during a meeting in Milan on February 20, 2026.
Gasol, who won silver medals in 2008 and 2012 and bronze in 2016, was first elected to the commission at the Tokyo 2020 Games and also serves on the IOC Coordination Commission for LA2028 and the IOC Ethics Commission.
He will be joined by Maja Wloszczowska of Poland as first vice chair, Humphrey Kayange of Kenya as second vice chair, and Oluseyi Smith of Canada, who holds a newly created third vice-chair position.
The Athletes' Commission, composed of up to 23 members, represents athletes globally and ensures diverse representation across gender, regions, and sports.
Gasol emphasized collaboration and progress in advancing athlete representation within the Olympic movement.
