OpenAI considered alerting Canadian authorities about Jesse Van Rootselaar in June 2025 after its systems flagged his account for violent intentions, but decided not to report him, citing no imminent or credible threat of serious harm.
The account was banned for policy violations.
After Van Rootselaar killed eight people in a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in February 2026, OpenAI shared data with the RCMP, which is now reviewing digital and physical evidence.
The attack, one of Canada’s deadliest since 2020, followed a prior history of mental health-related police contacts and a prior killing at home.
OpenAI said it is strengthening its monitoring and remains committed to supporting the investigation.
