OpenAI considered alerting Canadian authorities about Jesse Van Rootselaar in June 2025 after its systems flagged his account for violent intentions but decided not to report due to insufficient evidence of an imminent threat.
The account was banned for policy violations.
After Van Rootselaar carried out a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in February 2026, killing eight people, OpenAI shared data with the RCMP, which is now investigating digital and physical evidence.
The attack, one of Canada’s deadliest since 2020, followed a prior incident in which Van Rootselaar killed his mother and stepbrother.
OpenAI said it remains committed to supporting the investigation and has since strengthened its monitoring protocols.
